Comparing Solar Structure Detection Methods in SDO/AIA Observations and the Application to Raw Uncalibrated Data
has been published!
In this work, we investigate the use of artificial intelligence for the automatic identification and characterization of key solar coronal structures, including active regions and coronal holes, using observations from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We evaluate and compare deep-learning segmentation and detection approaches alongside traditional computer-vision techniques, with a particular focus on both predictive performance and computational efficiency. In addition, we assess the robustness of our proposed schemes on real, raw solar imaging data, highlighting their potential use onboard future space missions.
Understanding and accurately detecting these solar features is an important step toward next-generation space-weather monitoring and forecasting systems, including future applications in solar flare prediction and onboard artificial intelligence for space missions.

🚀 Summer School on Machine Learning for Space 2026
I participated as an instructor and had the pleasure of presenting basic concepts of onboard AI. I also presented how we designed use cases for solar flare forecasting and solar image segmentation, targeting both onboard AI applications and scientific studies.
